he Sabha Parva contains one of the most pivotal events in all of Indian literature — the game of dice. Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, is invited to a rigged game of dice by Shakuni (Duryodhana's uncle). In his dharmic commitment to honor the challenge, Yudhishthira gambles away his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers, and finally Draupadi herself. Draupadi is dragged into the assembly hall and publicly humiliated as Dushasana attempts to disrobe her. Krishna miraculously protects her. This event becomes the immediate cause of the Kurukshetra War and raises profound questions about dharma, honor, and the silence of the wise in the face of injustice.

वैशंपायन उवाच एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्मो विरराम महायशाः व्याजहारोत्तरं तत्र सहदेवोऽर्थवद्वचः

Vaiśampāyana said: Having said this, the immensely famous Bhīṣma became quiet. Then Sahadeva uttered these words of great import.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इतना कहकर परम प्रसिद्ध भीष्म शांत हो गये। तब सहदेव ने ये बड़े महत्व के वचन कहे।

Kṛṣṇā understood that this ocean of kings, surrounded by waves of soldiers, was getting ready to do battle.

कृष्ण समझ गए कि राजाओं का यह समुद्र, सैनिकों की लहरों से घिरा हुआ, युद्ध करने के लिए तैयार हो रहा है।

Sahadeva, god among men, completed the ceremony, worshipping especially the brāhmana-s and the kṣatriya-s who deserved such homage.

"Do you think that I am still the general of your army? Do we stand here ready to fight the assembled Vṛṣṇi-s and Pāṇḍava-s?"
